The Queen’s Promenade was completed in 1854 and opened by Queen Victoria in 1856 when she was passing through the borough (there is a story behind this which Tim will explain). The promenade has been a much-loved open green space ever since, with hundreds of thousands of people walking along on a daily basis, feeding the ducks, or just watching the river go by.
